TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Cameron Norrie (26) meets Carlos Alcaraz in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
A hugely exciting match is expected here in the First Round of the 2021 US Open as Cameron Norrie faces Carlos Alcaraz. Both players are surely in the running for the Most Improved Player award and have been hugely successful so far in 2021. Norrie is an ultra-solid baseline player while Alcaraz is an explosive all-around player, who seems destined to be a superstar in the future. Who will come through this tough encounter and reach the Second Round here in Flushing Meadows?
Cameron Norrie is seeded #26 here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #29 on the ATP Tour. The left handed Brit has simply been outstanding in 2021 and has been one of the most consistent players on Tour. He has a very solid 37-18 win/loss record this season and reached an impressive five Finals, winning his maiden ATP title last month at the Los Cabos Open. Norrie has been going through a difficult patch since then however, winning just two out of his past six matches, but those have come against very good players such as John Isner and Karen Khachanov. While he is the favorite here, his opponent Carlos Alcaraz is a hugely dynamic young star who is certainly capable of causing the upset. here at the 2021 US Open.
Carlos Alcaraz is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked at a career-high #54 in the world. The 18 year old Spanish star has been turning heads on the ATP Tour for the past few seasons and has already claimed a number of impressive scalps in his young career. While he is considered more of a clay court player, he has shown his worth on hard courts, notably with a Semi-Final appearance at the Winston-Salem Open last week. While he is considered the underdog here due to the surface and his lower ranking, he should not be written off here, as his aggressive baseline game, particularly his forehand can be major weapons on this quick hard courts. If he plays well he is more than capable of causing the upset over the higher-ranked Cameron Norrie.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and in my opinion will be a classic, and could be one of the picks of the First Round matches. It is difficult to pick a winner here as the players have very different game styles, and are both capable of winning. Cameron Norrie is the safe pick due to his consistency and experience, but I am going with the young star in the making Carlos Alcaraz to cause the upset here. He is in great form while Norrie has been struggling, and while I do think that it will be a tight match, I am backing the Spaniard to continue going from strength to strength and getting the win here, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open.
