TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Nina Stojanovic in the Round of 128 on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
Will Aryna Sabalenka go through? Will Nina Stojanovic pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Sabalenka can make a strong showing to kick off her campaign here in New York and see if she’s a title contender. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open?
Aryna Sabalenka has had a solid year, although she’s had many early exists in tournaments, she’s still been able to make many deep runs in different tournaments including a semi-final result at Wimbledon. She is definitely the heavy favorite, playing someone who is hardly in the top 100 and is rather unknown. Stojanovic hasn’t had many matches this year either, not even being able to compete in the North American hard-court swing thus far, I think even if Sabalenka has an off day she should be feeling rather confident about moving through to the next round. Sabalenka is definitely one of the favorites for the title and if she is able to serve well, I think she will be able to generate some momentum and back up the rest of her game as she tries to make a good run at the 2021 US Open.
Nina Stojanovic is hardly in the top 100, and has not had very much playing time this year, particularly on the hard courts of North America, which is definitely not an advantage for her, she’s not super young either coming in at 25 years old, so it seems like these sort of results have been rather consistent. Stojanovic doesn’t really have much of a chance, so in my eyes to defeat Aryna Sabalenka, she will need to play super aggressive and try to go for winners off almost every ball. If she does that with few unforced errors, then I’m sure she can win, the problem is it’s a very difficult game-plan to execute, just as hard as this match will be to win against the number two seed, who is the heavy favorite to get a good win under her belt and head through to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
Aryna Sabalenka and Nina Stojanovic have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. While we don’t know exactly how they’d match up, I suspect it would be a hard match up for Stojanovic, and not just because of the vast difference in skill. Sabalenka plays a big game, hitting hard and serving well to win her matches, Stojanovic will need to play a lot of defensive balls, including ones with lots of spin to be able to defend well and try to keep Sabalenka from closing her out while she’s pushed back behind the court. It will most certainly be a very tough match, and I definitely foresee that Sabalenka will have a nice and easy win to kick off her 2021 US Open campaign.
