TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Cameron Norrie in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021.
Will Karen Khachanov follow up some good results as of late? Will Cameron Norrie carry on his impeccable form? This match-up will serve for an interesting one, where we will have a fourth meeting between these two in 2021, it could be a close one. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Karen Khachanov has just won the silver medal at the Olympics, after reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon just a little bit earlier. Needless to say, he’s in impeccable form, using his enormous serve and very powerful groundstrokes to blow opponents off the court, it will undoubtedly be a big challenge for Cameron Norrie. Especially if Khachanov is able to maintain the firepower throughout the 2021 Toronto Open and play aggressive the way we know he loves to.
Cameron Norrie is coming into this matchup in great form as mentioned earlier, winning many matches over many top players all year long, just winning the Los Cabos Open two weeks ago. At the Washington Open in his latest match, he lost a tight one to Kei Nishikori, not a bad loss at all. I suspect he’ll pick himself back up and try his best against the very tough hurdle ahead of him in Khachanov. I don’t think his game matches up super well against his, not being too aggressive of a player himself, he may just let Karen Khachanov step into the court and blow him away, it’ll definitely be interesting to see if he’s able to use his unique game and skillset to ensure that doesn’t happen.
Karen Khachanov and Cameron Norrie have met three times before, with Cameron Norrie leading the head to head 2-1. Despite what I said earlier about their match-up, Norrie does in fact lead their very relevant head to head, considering all three matches happened this year. He did win the last two on clay though, where we know Cam Norrie is much stronger than Karen Khachanov. Before those two matches, they played on a fast hard court, where Khachanov blew Norrie away 6-2 6-2. At the Lyon Open however, where their most recent match was played, Norrie blew Karen away on the clay courts of France 6-1 6-1. It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but just judging off recent results and conditions here in Canada, it’s likely that Khachanov will be able to prevail. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
