TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open Open as David Goffin takes on Thiago Monteiro in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 24th, 2021.
Will David Goffin snap his losing streak? Will Thiago Monteiro back up his great win? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see where the level of Goffin is at and whether or not he is ready to play at a very high level once again. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
David Goffin has been on a 5 match losing streak for a few months, however, I believe that this match is a great opportunity to snap that streak and get back to the level he was at previously. He has shown a high level of tennis at times this year, even winning a title earlier on. Thiago Monteiro got through a tough battle, so I think Goffin snapping his streak is definitely not out of the realm of possibility. He has definitely been struggling with his service, I think if he’s able to put a lot of first serves in and get the first few shots going for him each point, he should be able to get some confidence and carry that momentum to be able to take down Monteiro. While it will not be easy by any means considering his current form and situation, if he is able to serve consistently and not miss too many shots I have high hopes that he’ll take the match win and carry some confidence throughout the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Thiago Monteiro got through a tough battle, winning by 2 points in the third set tiebreaker. He should feel pretty confident going into this match as David Goffin has been on a 5 match losing streak, he most certainly has the chance to extend that to a 6 match losing streak. But it will not be easy by any means, considering his opponent is still a former top 10 player and even rose his game to that type of level at times earlier on this year. Today he was very clutch, serving pretty well and converting on 1 of only 2 break point chances while fending off 10 of them. However, the fact that he did have 10 break points to save is not a magnificent sign, as Goffin was one of the better returners on the ATP Tour before injuries set him back. Still, as long as he serves well and stays aggressive off second serves, I think he should feel pretty good about taking down the number 2 seed here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
David Goffin and Thiago Monteiro have met one time before, with David Goffin leading the head to head 1-0. Their one and only match was 5 years ago, when Goffin was in some of the best form of his life, at a less known event. Despite that, the score was 6-2 6-2 6-0. An extremely dominant display, while it was a while ago, Goffin should definitely have a good grasp of what he will need to do tomorrow. Monteiro will need to make a lot of first serves to put pressure on Goffin, seeing as he isn’t very confident right now, simply making a lot of balls should make him doubt himself and will help him get the win. However, we are definitely in for a treat where we will see if fan favorite David Goffin is able to get back into good form at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
