TennisSection preview the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (2) faces Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16 on Thursday August 19th, 2021.
Second seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas has regained some form last week after a miserable past few weeks, and will be hoping to take it a step further here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. The Greek superstar reached the Semis last week at the Rogers Cup and is one of the main contenders for the title here. Can the unfancied Lorenzo Sonego cause the massive upset and advance to the Quarter-Finals? Or will Tsitsipas advance as expected as he seeks his second Masters-1000 title of the year?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked #3 in the ATP Tour, and is the second seed here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. He enjoyed a superb start to the season in 2021 but has somewhat plateaued after reaching his first ever Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. He got things somewhat back on track last week at the Rogers Cup, reaching the Semi-Finals before surprisingly losing in three sets to eventually runner-up Reilly Opelka. Tsitsipas started strongly here in Cincinnati, defeating the dangerous youngster Sebastian Korda 7-6. 6-3. The Greek star served very well during that match, and was able to dictate things from the baseline. If he plays to the best of his ability here he should be able to overpower his opponent Lorenzo Sonego and enters this match as the favorite.
Lorenzo Sonego is unseeded here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open and is ranked #27 in the ATP world rankings. The Italian has really improved and matured as a player over the past few results, and has had some outstanding results. While he has seen his ranking improve drastically he has had some inconsistent results and will be hoping to rectify that, especially after a poor Rogers Cup where he lost in the First Round. He has been outstanding so far here in Cincinnati, defeating Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul without dropping a set. Stefanos Tsitsipas will provide his first real test however, and he enters this match as the massive underdog and it will take a career-best performance to cause the upset here.
This will be the second time that the two players have met on the ATP Tour, with Tsitsipas winning their only career meeting in straight sets at the Miami Open earlier this year. Despite his recent struggles, I am expecting a similar result here. Lorenzo Sonego has really come out of nowhere to make a name for himself on the ATP Tour but he is not on the same level as his opponent and it is unlikely that he will be able to sustain the level needed to cause the upset here, especially in such a big tournament. The Greek star is a major title favorite here and at the US Open, and he will win, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
