TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 19th, 2021.
Will Grigor Dimitrov continue his amazing run here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open after causing two upsets in a row, and now going for the biggest win in his career in a long time? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to cruise and use the momentum he gained in his matches over the last week and a half to dominate his way into the Quarter-Finals? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Who will it be?
Grigor Dimitrov put on an incredible performance against the always tough Alexander Bublik, shocking us all with his trick shots as he won the match in straight sets 6-3/7-5. Dimitrov has not shown this level of tennis in a long time and it is great to see. The Bulgarian has an amazing serve when he is confident, and his hand skills are so good as he can basically hit so hard and so minimally depending on where his opponent is. Grigor Dimitrov will come out here in this Round of 16 match very confident after his two amazing wins, but he now meets the man nicknamed the octopus, Daniil Medvedev, due to his amazing return game at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Daniil Medvedev has not lost any momentum from the Toronto Open coming into the 2021 Cincinnati Open this week, beating Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets in his first match 6-2/6-2. Daniil is just on another level at the moment, returning basically every ball with interest and being able to wear down opponents continuously. Daniil Medvedev knows that this is going to be his last tournament before the US Open this year, so the better form he finds here, the better prepared he will be going into the US Open. However, he meets a motivated and growing in confidence Grigor Dimitrov, so he will have an interesting match on his hands.
Daniil Medvedev and Grigor Dimitrov have met 3 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-1. They have not met since 2019, but their only 2 matches in these hard court conditions were won by Medvedev in straight sets. I expect the same here because Medvedev is just on another level to anyone at the moment. Grigor has been in great form so far this week, but once he get stuck into draining and tough rallies against Medvedev, he will begin to lose confidence, and when Dimitrov is not confident, he is not playing well. I expect the big swinging Russian to continue to cruise as he enters the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
