TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021.
Will Diego Schwartzman come through against a tough opponent? Will Frances Tiafoe pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the best grinders on tour clashing with a more flashy, aggressive player. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Diego Schwartzman came through in a tough battle against Dan Evans, it was a great test for him where he pulled out some good tennis in some important moments. He returned quite well, and was able to maintain his consistent heavy groundstrokes to play some aggressive tennis while also just trying to stay in the point and wait for unforced errors. His returning I think will be key against Frances Tiafoe, who has a pretty solid serve himself, as long as he’s able to get a lot of those back into play, he should be able to outgrind him in most exchanges from the back of the court. He will also need to be weary of Tiafoe attacking his own serve, which is probably the worst on the ATP Tour due to his height. As long as he’s able to play like he normally does with lots of consistent deep ball striking, I see him getting a nice win under his belt, it’ll be mostly about whether or not Frances is able to have success with aggression or not to see if Diego can be challenged for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Frances Tiafoe got a very good win over Hugo Humbert, who has been in some form recently. To take out someone like Umbert should be a big confidence boost for Tiafoe, who will look to take down another big name in the tournament. Only this time, his opponent is ranked even higher and is definitely more experienced. Tiafoe definitely has hope here in this match, but it will be a tough one for sure, where he will definitely need to serve super well and consistently to try and keep Schwartzman off his rada there, he will also need to be super aggressive on Diegos serve, as he can get a lot of chances off those, he’ll just need to keep going for opportunity after opportunity in my eyes if he wants to be competitive in a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe have met one time before, with Diego Schwartzman leading the head to head 1-0. It’s an interesting match up, and Tiafoe can definitely grind it out with Schwartzman sometimes, but it’ll be really hard for him to win more points doing that, as he’ll most likely eventually hit a winner or give a short ball for Diego to just put away. Their one and only meeting was this year on clay, with Diego winning in 3 sets, neither player was in the best form at that time, and Diego will always be the clear favorite on clay, so I don’t think that match will give us many indicators for the result of this one. Although both players will know how to play each other, and it’ll primarily revolve around how Schwartzman deals with the serving that Tiafoe will try to execute to perfection if he wants to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
