TennisSection previews the 2022 Sydney Open as Adrian Mannarino takes on Maxime Cressy in the first round on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022.
Adrian Mannarino is sitting at his worst-ever position on the ATP rankings in more than five years. His 2022 campaign began in defeat in Melbourne. Can he change it at the Sydney Open when he takes on an in-form Maxime Cressy? Will Maxime Cressy have much in him after his strong week in Melbourne as he comes to the 2022 Sydney Open?
Adrian Mannarino lost routinely to Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the Melbourne Open last week. Mannarino is the midst of a tumultuous time on tour after putting together the worst season of his career since 2013. Mannarino finished with a winning percentage of 35%, winning 14 matches from a possible 26 in 2021. The Frenchman tumbled in the rankings and finished the year outside the Top 70. Mannarino will have a massive opportunity to bag his first win of the new season against Maxime Cressy at the Sydney Open. It is hard to see the American staying competitive for long in this match after his week-long exertions in Melbourne.
Maxime Cressy had a great week in Melbourne last week, beating big names like Reilly Opelka and making his way to the Final where he lost to Rafael Nadal. Having played so well, he is still scheduled to be on the next flight to Sydney for his first-round match at the Sydney Open against Adrian Mannarino. While the pre-match expectation is that the big-serving American will compete again in 48 hours time, it wouldn’t come as a surprise should he pull out. Cressy came through the qualifiers in Melbourne and went on to shoot down the likes of Reilly Opelka and Grigor Dimitrov with his destructive serve to reach his first ATP final.
Adrian Mannarino and Maxime Cressy have not played each other at any level before. Mannarino is the more accomplished of the pair on the ATP Tour amassing over 200 match wins. The Frenchman will be the fresher player at the Sydney Open. Although confidence is at an all-time low, this match gives Mannarino the perfect opportunity to bounce back and return to winning ways.
