TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Alexander Bublik takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021.
Will Alexander Bublik get a solid win? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two of the most exciting players on the ATP tour going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Alexander Bublik has had a great year, having defeated many top players and winning many matches consistently using his enormous serve and all the versatile aspects in his game. Bublik definitely raised some questions today in his match against Marcos Giron, not hitting his second serve very well and often losing points off that wing, which usually doesn’t happen nearly as much as it did. He definitely can lose against Dimitrov as he isn’t the most consistent player on the ATP Tour himself Bublik. However, he has been the by far better player this year overall, and I expect him to be able to serve well and play aggressively, throwing Grigor off his game, drawing many unforced errors from him to be able to put Dimitrov away in a relatively straightforward match to move forward to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Grigor Dimitrov has had a very lackluster year, flying out in his first match in almost every tournament he played, but today he put on an exceptional performance against RBA, which in my eyes was quite shocking upset all things considered. Although Alexander Bublik is practically the complete opposite of RBA, using power, aggression, serving, and lots of finesse and versatility in his game, as opposed to a more grindy, consistent style of play. I suspect that with the form Grigor has been in recently, Bublik will create many problems for him due to the way he plays, where Dimitrov just won’t be able to find a rhythm. However, he did serve very well in his first match, so I expect him to do so again and definitely push Bublik to at least one tight set. However in the case that he doesn’t make a ton of first serves, I think Alexander will use a lot of pace and aggression to throw Grigor off and totally put him off of his game, just due to recent results and form that we’ve seen Dimitrov in.
Alexander Bublik and Grigor Dimitrov have met two times before, with Alexander Bublik leading the head to head 2-0. Neither of those matches are extremely good indicators for the winner of their match, however, it is clear that they’re both familiar with each other and should have a clear gameplan in mind. Their most recent encounter was this year at the Wimbledon Championships, with Bublik winning in 3 tight sets. Now, that was on grass, where the speed there can be compared to the court speed of Cincinnati, a very fast hard court. The surfaces are completely different despite the similarity in speed, however this does give us a good indicator that we’ll be seeing some tight sets with a lot of the match depending on serve. The outcome will most likely rely on whoever hits their second serve better and is able to win more points behind it, we know Bublik has a better serve than Dimitrov so it’s just a question of whether or not he’ll be able to bring it out tomorrow and show a strong display to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
