TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open Open as John Isner takes on Cameron Norrie in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 17th, 2021.
Will John Isner follow up his incredible results from Toronto? Will Cameron Norrie get back to winning ways? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two very different styles going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
John Isner has just had some amazing results in Toronto, reaching the Semi-Finals where he lost to the very in form Daniil Medvedev. He’s been more than just a serve recently, having hit consistent powerful balls, constantly being able to close with some nice volleying. Typically when John Isner plays a match, it’s always very close and it could go either way at the end of the set, when playing Cameron Norrie, he should focus on serving to many different spots, as Norrie is a very well rounded player, with no big weaknesses on any wing. It’s obvious that Cameron Norrie should be able to defeat John Isner in almost any engagement from the back of the court, so Isner will have to take those exchanges out of the equation, going for rippers down the line, serve and volleying a lot, to solidify not being broken, but also to be able to put a lot of pressure on Norrie in the tiebreaks we will probably see from these too. He should be feeling pretty confident going into this tournament, particularly this match to fight for a post in the Round of 32 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Cameron Norrie has had a great year, having results that he’s never had before, although admittedly, he has struggled in the past month or so. If he doesn’t raise his level, this matchup against John Isner will be very tough, who is in some serious form at the moment. What players so often do against the guys with huge serves on the ATP Tour, is let up at the wrong moments on his own serve and allow Isner to get the break due to unforced errors. It’s very often a mental game against these guys in that sense, so Norrie will have to have the utmost mental fortitude going into this match tomorrow, so he can safely reach tiebreakers or potentially capitalize on very few opportunities that he will get to break the Isner serve. Norrie is a lefty, which may make it easier to hold against Isner, considering he’s such a big guy, he’ll probably be able to spin lots of serves away from him as well as into his body. This also makes the baseline rallies easier for him to take over, those are obviously the situations he wants to get into, so he should try and block a lot of returns back and hope to make sure Isner doesn’t attack him.
John Isner and Cameron Norrie have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. The match tomorrow most likely rests on John Isner’s shoulders, whether he’ll be able to serve huge in the right moments and whether or not he can avoid getting into long rallies, these are two things which he does quite well, so I have confidence that Isner will not face many problems on his serve tomorrow, and that he’ll stay composed throughout any tiebreaks that may and probably will come up. Cameron Norrie will have to play with Isner, using a variety of different shots, including slices, drop shots, and heavier balls to make sure that he can start those long rallies, either way, it’ll be a tight contest with little room for error between these two guys. It should be a close one as we watch on to see who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
