Aryna Sabalenka is currently ranked #4 in the WTA world rankings, and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 French Open. After a breakthrough season in 2020, she has kept the momentum going with some fantastic results. The Belarusian has been the standout player so far during the clay court season, claiming the title in Madrid and reaching the Final in Stuttgart. In this type of form and with her game she should be considered one of the main contenders for the title here at Roland Garros 2021, and backed that claim up with a dominant performance over Ana Konjuh. She is the huge favorite here against compatriot Aliaksandra Sasnovich and is expected to advance here without much trouble.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich is currently ranked #103 in the WTA world rankings, but was formerly ranked as high as #30. The Belarusian has struggled mightily over the past few seasons, and that continued during her First Round win over French wildcard Diane Parry. After a poor second set, Sasnovich recovered well to win the third but knows she will have to be much better here against Aryna Sabalenka, a much higher ranked opponent. She enters this match as the massive underdog here at the 2021 French Open, and will have to be at her absolute best to make this match competitive. Sasnovich is not the player she once was and is not expected to cause the third seed much trouble here at Roland Garros 2021.
This will be the second time that the two players are meeting on the WTA Tour, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the head to head series 1-0. They last played two years ago in Wuhan, with Sabalenka winning in straight sets. I expect this to be another straightforward to the third seed, who should be considered a serious contender for the title here at the 2021 French Open. Aliaksandra Sasnovich is nowhere near the required level to put up much resistance here, and I think this match will be over quickly.
