TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Gael Monfils (11) meets John Isner in the Quarter-Finals on Friday August 13th, 2021.
A very surprising yet exciting match awaits us here at the 2021 Toronto Open as eleventh seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils faces John Isner for a spot in Saturday’s Semis. Neither player was expected to still be here at this stage of the competition but they have played fantastic tennis this week and are fully deserving to be here. Will it be the big-serving American Isner getting the win? Or can Gael Monfils put his recent struggles behind him and reach his first ATP Semi-Final in over a year?
Gael Monfils is currently ranked #22 on the ATP Tour and is the eleventh seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open. The Frenchman has undergone a horrible past two seasons and will be relieved to be in the Quarter-Finals. After being made to work in the First Round by Aussie John Millman, he dispatched Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in a match that many thought he would lose. He has struggled greatly with his confidence, but that seems to be almost fully restored and he looks like he is enjoying playing again. Monfils was seemingly back to his best against Tiafoe, controlling the baseline with some outstanding transition tennis between offense and defense. While he is higher ranked, it is hard to call him the favorite here against John Isner as it really can go either way.
John Isner is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is ranked #30 in the ATP world rankings. Isner had a poor season in 2020 but has seemingly regained some form here in 2021, as he has had some solid results. One of the favorites for the title here due to his big serve and great experience. He has simply been outstanding here at the Rogers Cup, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Cristian Garin and Andrey Rublev en route to the Quarter-Finals. The win over Rublev will have given him huge confidence, and if he is able to serve well he should probably be considered the slight favorite here against Gael Monfils.
This will be the thirteenth meeting between the two ATP Tour veterans, with the Frenchman leading the head to head series 7-5. Both men have been outstanding so far here at the 2021 Toronto Open and are aiming to take it one step further by reaching the Semis. While Gael Monfils is the higher ranked player, I think that John Isner will get the hard-fought win here, advancing to Semi Finals. His serve remains a massive weapon and I think that he will use it to his advantage, making life very uncomfortable for the Frenchman.
