TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Andrey Rublev (4) meets John Isner in the Round of 16 on Thursday August 12th, 2021.
A blockbuster match is expected here at the 2021 Toronto Open as fourth seeded Andrey Rublev faces John Isner for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Both men have been in great form so far at this event and will be liking their chances to advance here. Will the Russian advance as expected? Or can the towering American cause the minor upset here on home soil?
Andrey Rublev is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is currently ranked #7 on the ATP Tour. The Russian is looking to bounce back from a disappointing Olympics, where he lost in the First Round of singles but managed to win the Mixed Doubles Gold Medal. Rublev started strongly against Fabio Fognini, defeating the veteran Italian in two close sets. While he has been having a solid season so far, winning one title and runner-up at two, he has failed to match his heroics of last year where he won a whopping five titles. He is the favorite here against the American John Isner, but has never beaten his opponent, and knows that he will have to be at his absolute best to get the win here.
John Isner is ranked #30 in the ATP world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open. The tall American has started well here at the Rogers Cup, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the First Round before upsetting thirteenth seeded Cristian Garin in the Second. As always, he used his booming first serve to propel him to victory, serving an incredible 21 aces. While he is the slight underdog here against Andrey Rublev, he has never lost to him, and will be confident of doing well if he is able to continue his serving exploits. Many things are pointing in his favor, such as form and the fact that he is playing on home soil, so he will be confident and liking his chances here.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with John Isner leading the head to head series 2-0. Surprisingly, the American won their last meeting on clay earlier this year, a result that not many would have predicted. This match will likely be a very close one, and hinges upon the Isner serve. The formula is simple. If he serves well, he has a great shot at causing the upset. If he is slightly off and the Russian is able to get an early break, he should be able to come away with it. While I expect a tough match, I am backing Andrey Rublev to register his first win over the American and advance to the Quarter-Finals. He is a top 10 player for a reason, and I think he has what it takes to win in two very tough sets.
