TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Grigor Dimitrov takes on Reilly Opelka in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021.
Will Reilly Opelka pull off another upset? Will Grigor Dimitrov manage to get back into winning form? This match would be a great test for Grigor, who’s been struggling as of late, and would be a great win for Reilly who just had a great win. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Grigor Dimitrov has struggled heavily on the ATP Tour this year, despite having a promising start at the beginning of the year where he played well down under, he’s struggled a lot with his form, making way too many unforced errors and playing rather reckless tennis, losing against many people who he should be able to win against. Grigor has had some inconsistencies everywhere in his game, from service to groundstrokes, he just hasn’t been playing where he should be playing. So to defeat Reilly Opelka will be hard for him, considering it’s unlikely he’ll get any looks to break the Opelka serve, and one of the ways that players lose against someone with an enormous serve is if they just play one bad game. And whilst Grigor is able to raise his level really high, he’s a loose cannon, and it’s extremely likely that he will have games tomorrow where he’s just out of rhythm and isn’t able to capitalize on any opportunities that he has.
Reilly Opelka just got a great win over Nick Kyrgios, who granted, hasn’t been playing the best tennis himself as of late, still was a dangerous opponent and the favorite to win the match. And he managed to edge it out after losing the first set. When he plays someone like current Grigor Dimitrov, he should feel pretty confident, as the return isn’t Dimitrovs strongest asset, not at all, so it’s unlikely that he’ll be losing serve open. And while it is likely that a tiebreak could be played, I feel like he’ll be able to break him, as the pressure inside Dimitrovs mind will be a lot for him, and I feel like he’s going to have a few games where his level just drops much lower than he wants it to. Because of all this, I think if Opelka serves as well as he normally does, he should feel a good amount of confidence going into this one.
Reilly Opelka and Grigor Dimitrov have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s always pretty unpredictable when looking at a match with someone like Reilly who has one of the greatest serves of all time. However, do to current conditions and form, Reilly should be feeling pretty confident that he can edge out any tight situations, including tiebreakers. It’s also quite likely that Dimitrov will play several bad games, resulting in basically a free set for Reilly. It could be an interesting match depending on if Dimitrov has been able to recover at all mentally, however, it’s rather likely that Opelka will be able to power through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
