TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Marin Cilic takes on Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Round of 64 on Monday, August 9th, 2021.
Will Marin Cilic get off to a strong start in his US hard court season after having a successful run in the doubles at the Tokyo Olympics a couple weeks ago, winning the Silver medal? Will Albert Ramos-Vinolas be able to play the strong tennis he has played all year but this time on hard courts instead of clay? These are two experienced opponents who can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the Toronto Open. Who will it be?
Albert Ramos-Vinolas has played very well in 2021, winning 20 matches this year and a title on clay as well. Albert is a very experienced player who can definitely hurt big name players when he is at his best. However, the Spaniard has not played in a while, losing his first match at the Hamburg Open over a month ago and not playing since then. Albert Ramos-Vinolas will be eager to get back on court and get back to his best, but it will be a very tough road ahead as he is going to meet the very in form and hard court loving, Marin Cilic, straight away here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Marin Cilic has been playing well on hard over the last couple of weeks, reaching the Final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in doubles and winning the Silver medal. Marin achieved his best ever career result on hard court, winning the US Open and he will aim to find some of that form again here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Marin has a huge serve and forehand, and when he is confident on his shots, they just fly through the court and opponents do not have the pace to return them. Marin Cilic will know he has a tough side of the draw here, especially as he meets Albert Ramos-Vinolas right from the start, but he will be confident in his ability after his run in Tokyo.
Marin Cilic and Albert Ramos-Vinolas have met 7 times before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 4-3. They have not met since 2019 so it will be interesting to see how the match up nowadays. However, going off of recent form, and the fact that we are on hard rather than on clay, I think this match is much more suited for Marin Cilic to come out and win. They have both won 20 matches on the ATP Tour this year, but Albert has lost 3 more matches than Marin, and Marin played very well in Tokyo and looks determined to do the same on the US hard courts. I still expect a tight battle between these two veterans, but Marin will make his way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Toronto Open.
