TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Kei Nishikori takes on Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 5th, 2021.
Will Cameron Norrie continue to play at a very high level in 2021 and get a big win against a big name in the tennis world? Will Kei Nishikori continue to raise back to his best as he aims to beat one of the most in form players this year? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will reach the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Cameron Norrie put on a solid performance against the American, Marcos Giron, in the Round of 32, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-3. Cameron Norrie has been in great form in 2021 as he has been able to reach many finals and win a title along the way. Cameron has established himself as a challenger in all ATP 250 tournaments, and he is now trying to get success in ATP 500. Cameron can definitely keep things tight with everyone, especially as he is able to move them around to their backhand as he is a lefty. However, he now meets Kei Nishikori who’s best shot is probably his backhand.
Kei Nishikori cruised through his match against the always tough and unpredictable Alexander Bublik, beating the Kazakh in straight sets 6-2/7-5. Kei Nishikori is showing us some amazing form as he is able to hurt opponents on both sides of the court, having a solid forehand but an even more solid backhand. Kei Nishikori will come out here in this Round of 16 match knowing that if he beats Cameron Norrie he will get one step closer to meeting Rafael Nadal on hard which is a challenge he loves to face. Will he get the big win here at the 2021 Washington Open?
Kei Nishikori and Cameron Norrie have met 1 time before, with Kei Nishikori leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019 where Kei won in straight sets at Wimbledon. I expect a tighter match than their prior encounter because Cameron has definitely improved since 2019, but I still expect Kei Nishikori coming through. Cameron has found success against opponents this year because he is able to direct the majority of balls to opponents’ backhands, but Kei loves that and he can hit any shot from the backhand side. Therefore, I see Kei taking advantage of this and getting himself in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
