TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Alexander Bublik (9) takes on Kei Nishikori in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 4th, 2021.
Will Alexander Bublik be able to get his US hard court season going well and impress like he has done for many tournaments in 2021? Will Kei Nishikori continue to improve his game as he gets closer and closer to his best after a 2020 season filled with injuries? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Alexander Bublik will be looking to bounce back after his first round loss at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, losing in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev. Alexander Bublik has been in great form in 2021, winning 27 matches this year and reaching the late stages of many tournaments. Alexander is one of the most naturally talented players on the ATP Tour, similarly to Nick Kyrgios in his ability to hit any shot. Bublik has begun to put some effort in his game and concentrate in matches, and this has definitely turned his career around this year. Alexander will know he can compete in many tournaments during this US hard court season, but he will want to get some momentum under his belt here at the 2021 Washington Open as he meets Kei Nishikori.
Kei Nishikori put on a dominant performance in the Round of 64, beating Sam Querrey easily in straight sets 6-4/6-3. Kei Nishikori is definitely a tough players to come up against as he has won Masters 1000 titles before, reached a Grand Slam Final, and been high up in the top 10. Kei is on his way back up the rankings and he is showing improvement week after week on the ATP Tour. Kei loves these hard court conditions because he is able to hit flat and through his opponents, especially on his backhand side. Kei will have to ensure he is ready for a tough challenge now that he meets Alexander Bublik at the 2021 Washington Open.
Kei Nishikori and Alexander Bublik have never met before, with this being their first career meeting on the ATP Tour. This is definitely going to be a tight and entertaining encounter as they both love these conditions and they will come out here ready to give it their best. Although Alexander has won more matches this year, Kei has shown us that he can still compete with the best and he has the experience. I see Kei using all of his experience and ability to change the direction of the ball easily to get the edge in this match and make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open.
