Washington Open 2021: Alex de Minaur vs. Steve Johnson Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Alex de Minaur (3) takes on Steve Johnson in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 4th, 2021.

Will Steve Johnson put on a great performance as he aims to get a big win under his belt and impress his local American crowd? Will Alex de Minaur come out and play his best tennis which we all know he can play on hard courts? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will reach the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?

Steve Johnson came through a tight match against Ramkumar Ramanathan in the Round of 64, beating him in straight sets 6-3/7-6. This match was much tighter than it should have been, as Steve Johnson should be dominating these sorts of matches, and the fact that he does not, separates him from other similarly ranked players. Steve will know that he needs to improve his level, but he will also know he will gain some momentum and confidence from the American crowd. Will this be enough for him to cause the upset against Alex de Minaur and get himself into the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open?

Alex de Minaur did not play any tournaments after Wiimbledon, working hard behind closed doors to get his game up to speed for the hard court season. Alex had a great grass court season prior to Wimbledon by reaching the Semi-Final in Queen’s and then winning the Eastbourne Open the next week. Alex will be happy to be back on hard because he is able to hit very flat through these courts and he moves so quickly around the court that he basically returns everything. Alex will have to fight off some early rust for not having played in a tournament for over a month, but once that wears off, he will be confident against Steve Johnson here at the 2021 Washington Open.

Alex de Minaur and Steve Johnson have met 4 times before, with the head to head tied at 2-2. They have not met in 2 years so we have to really look at their form over the last 2 years. Steve Johnson has remained similarly ranked over the last 2 years, just inside the top 100 in the world. However, Alex de Minaur has made a big name for himself, winning many titles, 2 of which came this year. Alex is a much better player than he was in those prior encounters and he will definitely show us this at the 2021 Washington Open. It will be tight just because Alex will be playing his first match in over a month, but he will make his way to the Round of 16 nonetheless.
