TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Alexander Zverev takes on Karen Khachanov in the Final on Sunday, August 1st, 2021.
Will Karen Khachanov bring home to Russia the Gold medal after not having been much of a chance at the beginning of the tournament? Will Alexander Zverev be able to keep the incredible momentum going as he beat the heavy favourite and best player in the world at the moment, Novak Djokovic, in the Semi-Finals to shock the world? Both players can win this match but only one will be able to have the glory of being a Gold medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Karen Khachanov cruised through his Semi-Final match against the very in form Pablo Carreno Busta in very easy fashion, beating the Spaniard in straight sets 6-3/6-3. After his amazing performances this week, many of us expected Pablo to win this match, especially as he has been able to go very far in many big tournaments in the last year. However, Karen Khachanov has been showing the level of tennis which he used to play in 2017 and 2018 which saw him win the Paris Masters. Karen is a power hitter who can power through anyone, and it is great to see him now compete for the Gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics against a fellow young gun in Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev put on an amazing comeback win against Novak Djokovic in the Semi-Finals, beating the Serbian in 3 sets 1-6/6-3/6-1. This match had it all. Novak was dominating for the first set and the first 3 games of the second set, getting an early break. It looked as if Djokovic was going to cruise through this match as he has done all week, but Zverev said post-match that once he was down a set and a break, he decided to just swing as hard as he could and not play passively. Clearly this paid off and took Novak by surprise, allowing the German to cause the huge upset and stop Djokovic’s Golden Slam hopes. Now Alexander meets a less tough opponent in Karen Khachanov, but it is always hard to play another match where you are expected to win when you already caused something which seemed impossible here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov have met 4 times before, with the head to head tied at 2-2. They have not met since 2019 and they have both changed a lot since then. Alexander has improved drastically since 2019, reaching the later stages of huge tournaments and finding consistency on all surfaces. Karen has gone down in form since then, but this week he has shown us the form of those years as he has been on top of his game. I expect a very tight match between these two power hitters from the baseline. However, the real aspect which will determine the winner of this match, is the backhand side. We know that both Karen and Alexander have amazing forehands and can hit great winners from that side, but Alexander also has an amazing backhand which can hang in there with the best. Karen has a good backhand, but it does falter quite a bit under pressure at moments. This will be the difference I believe, allowing Alexander Zverev to win Gold here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
