TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as Cameron Norrie (3) meets Emil Ruusuvuori in the Quarter-Finals on Friday July 30th, 2021.
Third seeded Cameron Norrie of Great Britain has been in great form lately and has been one of the most consistent performers on the ATP Tour in 2021. He has recently won his first career title on the Tour and his confidence will be sky high here. Next up for him is the talented young Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland who has stagnated a bit after some good results over the past two seasons. Can the Finn rediscover some form and cause the upset here in Atlanta? Or will Norrie get the win as expected and advance to yet another ATP Tour Semi-Final?
Cameron Norrie is ranked #29 on the ATP Tour at the moment, which is a career-high. The third seed has been having an outstanding year so far, reaching four finals and winning his first title in Los Cabos last week. He has carried that form over into the 2021 Atlanta Open and now that the draw has opened up nicely for him due to some upsets, should be considered one of the main contenders for the title. He was impressive in his straight sets demolition of talented Aussie Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16, using a measured approach to nullify his power and get the comfortable win. He enters this match against Emil Ruusuvuori as the big favorite and should be backed to advance to yet another Semi-Final here.
Emil Ruusuvuori is unseeded here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #78 on the ATP Tour. The youngster is considered one of the brightest young talents on the Tour and has been showing flashes of his ability over the past few seasons. After a strong 2020 he has largely failed to replicate that success, and will have been delighted to have found form here in Atlanta after struggling over the past few weeks. A very soli and aggressive baseliner, he defeated Macenzie McDonald and Benoit Paire to reach this stage, and enters this match against the in-form Cameron Norrie as the big underdog.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Norrie leading the head to head 1-0. He won in straight sets last year and Antwerp, and I expect a similar result year. He has grown tremendously as a player over the past season and will be in high spirits after winning the Los Cabos title last week. He hardly put a foot wrong in his win over Nick Kyrgios and should be able to control this match against Emil Ruusuvuori from the baseline. I expect Cameron Norrie to win comfortably, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Atlanta Open.
