A very surprising Semi-Final is upon us here at the 2021 Belgrade Open as world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia will face Slovenian Andrej Martin. This match looks very one sided on paper, and many will expect the top seed to dominate as he fine tunes his game before Roland Garros. Can the unseeded Martin continue his dream win here in Belgrade by claiming yet another upset? Or will Novak Djokovic cruise to yet another Final here at home?
After a difficult season so far in 2021, Novak Djokovic has been completely locked in so far here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. The Serbian superstar has struggled with injuries and loss of form this season and is now seemingly playing with a huge chip on his shoulder. He publicly stated that his aim was to win this event as he tuned up for Roland Garros and he has been true to his word so far, cruising through the draw here in his hometown event. Novak crushed Argentine Federico Coria 6-1, 6-0 in the Quarter-Final, a match that he completely dominated from start to finish. He will now meet unseeded Andrej Martin in the Semis in what is expected to be yet another one-sided affair. Martin has been fantastic so far, but in this sort of form Djokovic enters as the overwhelming favorite to reach the Final here in Belgrade.
Andrej Martin is ranked #119 in the world, and came through the Qualifying Rounds to enter the main draw at the 2021 Belgrade Open. The Slovenian had been having some poor results lately but has seemed to strike form here. After defeating Chistopher O’Connell in the First Round, he upset third seeded Nikolosz Basilashvili in the Round of 16, a match not many would have expected him to win. He proved that win wasn’t a fluke by causing yet another upset, over fifth seeded Dusan Lajovic in a match where he was down and out but recovered nicely to win. While he has been outstanding so far, he enters this match against Novak Djokovic as a massive underdog and will have to be at his very best to make this remotely competitive.
This will be the first time that the two players are facing each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This match is a very straightforward one to call, and will result in a straight-sets win for Novak Djokovic. Andrej Martin has turned many heads by reaching the Semi-Finals as a Qualifier, but his run will end here. Novak is a man on a mission as he seeks to win Roland Garros and it is very unlikely that he will give his opponent much of a chance here. Djokovic will win and advance to the Final here at the 2021 Belgrade Open.
