US Open 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Denis Shapovalov Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 32 on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022.

Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Denis Shapovalov pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have two of the biggest and most aggressive hitters on the ATP Tour coming to a clash. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 US Open?

Andrey Rublev got an amazing win over Kwon, taking him down for a 4th time this season after a tough 5 set battle in the first round. As he looks ahead to Denis Shapovalov, Rublev will know his chances to go through to the fourth round are looking up quite nicely. I really like this matchup for him, Shapovalov has been incredibly inconsistent lately, while Rublev was hitting some rockets against Kwon and looking like he really likes these conditions here at the 2022 US Open.

Denis Shapovalov has done well to put together a couple of wins after a tough few month stretch. Andrey Rublev won’t be an easy opponent though, and I don’t expect Shapovalov to be able to bring the level he needs here. Rublev, while a ball basher who can spray some errors himself, is able to play very consistently from the line if he pleases, while Shapovalov is far more error prone. Let’s see what the Canadian is able to do if he wants to extend his stay at the 2022 US Open.

Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov have met four times before, with the head to head being level at 2-2. They haven’t met since 2020, with 2 other meetings in 2019 and one in 2017. Rublev is better now than he was then, but because of the aggression Shapovalov has, if he’s on he can really take advantage of some of the lapses Rublev inevitably may have. Ultimately though, I expect nothing less than for Rublev to make a statement and book his spot in the Round of 16 at the 2022 US Open.
