TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Karen Khachanov in the Semi-Finals on Friday, July 30th, 2021.
Which of these two stars of the ATP Tour will get themselves in the Final here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? Will it be the higher ranked and favourite, Pablo Carreno Busta, to give himself a chance at stopping (most likely) Novak Djokovic from winning Gold? Will it be Karen Khachanov who has shown us all week that he should not be underestimated after a couple of years of sub-par performances on the ATP Tour?
Karen Khachanov used all of his experience and composure to come through an extremely tight match in the Quarter-Finals, beating the very in form Frenchman, Ugo Humbert, in 3 sets 7-6/4-6/6-3. Karen Khachanov knew that he needed to be at his best in that match and he did just that, ensuring that the game was more focused on playing on his forehand side into Humbert’s backhand side as he is a lefty. In the second set, Humbert dictated play a bit more so he was able to hurt Khachanov on his backhand side, but Karen quickly turned that around. Karen will know he has the experience and success to make it this far, but he is now going to have to be even better as he meets the very tough, Pablo Carreno Busta, in the Semi-Finals here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Pablo Carreno Busta put on a great display of tennis in his victory in the Quarter-Finals, dominating the first set and then coming back from a break down in the second set to beat the Russian, Daniil Medvedev, to win in straight sets sets 6-2/7-6. Pablo had control of the match in the first set, but once that was over, Medvedev went backstage during the 10 minute break, took a cold shower and recomposed himself and his game. Medvedev came back out and just dominated the rallies, ensuring he did not miss a ball and stayed extremely close to the baseline with his shots. However, we can never underestimate Pablo Carreno Busta who made his own mini-comeback to then win the match in the tiebreak. Now Pablo meets the in form Karen Khachanov and he will have to come out playing like he did against Medvedev if he wants to give himself a chance at the Final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Karen Khachanov have met 5 times before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 3-2. They met earlier this year in Monte Carlo where Pablo won easily 6-2/6-3. Karen is a good player and he has been in top form all week, but he is still not near the level of Pablo. Pablo loves to play backhand rallies and he will wear Karen down in my opinion. Pablo has been in top form in the last month, winning the Hamburg Open and now dominating against Daniil Medvedev. Pablo’s hard work, dedication, and overall sound game will allow him to make his way to the Final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as he is in search for Gold.
