TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Alexander Zverev takes on Jeremy Chardy in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday, July 29th, 2021.
Will Jeremy Chardy use all of his experience to get a huge upset win under his belt and get close to winning an Olympic medal? Will Alexander Zverev continue to put on solid performances and get himself into the Semi-Finals? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Jeremy Chardy had to fight through a tight 3 set match against Liam Broady, beating the Brit 7-6/4-6/6-1. Jeremy Chardy is definitely going to be very happy with his performance the fact that he has made it further than anyone expected at the beginning of the tournament. However, his level needs to improve drastically in this Quarter-Final match if he is going to be able to compete with the remaining players left in the draw. Jeremy will have to play as if he has nothing to lose and he will need to swing freely without caring whether he wins or loses against Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev put on a solid performance in the third round, beating the in form Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets 6-4/7-6. Alexander Zverev was solid for the first set and a half, having a break in the second set. However, he then let his guard down for a moment and this allowed Nikoloz to get back into the set and Zverev had to win the match in a very tight tiebreak. Alexander will have to ensure he does not let his guard down at moments anymore, especially when he is ahead in a match, because the likes of Jeremy Chardy and any further potential opponents here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will not let him get away with it.
Alexander Zverev and Jeremy Chardy have met 5 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 4-1. They always play extremely tight encounters, with 3 of their 5 encounters going to a 3rd of 5th set and one of their two other matches being won 7-6/7-6 by Alexander. I expect a tight match here because Zverev should be winning this match but Jeremy knows he can compete and he has nothing to lose. I still expect Alexander Zverev to come out on top in the end and make his way to the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by playing well on his serve and backhand side.
