TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, July 27th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe use the momentum gained from his dominant first round win here in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to cause another upset win over Tsitsipas? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get revenge for his big loss to Frances just last month at Wimbledon? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Frances Tiafoe absolutely dominated against Soonwoo Kwon in the first round, beating the South Korean in two dominant sets 6-3/6-2. Frances Tiafoe did not come out to play around and he was determined to make an impression in his first match. Frances is always a tough opponent to meet because when he is at his best he can outpower you with ease and he can move you around the court very quickly. Frances will know he can make it far here in Tokyo, especially as he has already beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas just last month. Can the American cause the huge upset again as he aims to get into the Round of 16 here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
Stefanos Tsitsipas had to fight in a tight first round match against the experienced Philipp Kohlschreiber, beating the German in 3 sets 6-3/3-6/6-3. Stefanos should have really won that match in straight sets but it is understandable with this being his first match on a hard court in a fair few months. Stefanos Tsitsipas will know that he cannot afford to let his guard down as he did at moments against Kohlschreiber, because he does not meet an easy opponent next. Tsitsipas meets Frances Tiafoe who absolutely schooled him in straight sets on the grass courts of Wimbledon last month, so if Tsitsipas wants to win he needs to try and get himself higher up the baseline hitting balls early rather than staying in useless rallies.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe have met 3 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-1. On a normal day I would have predicted Tsitsipas to win this match convincingly. However, with his loss at Wimbledon and the fact he had to beat Kohlschreiber in 3 sets, I see this match being tighter. Tsitsipas will still win as we are on hard instead of grass, so he can play a bit more aggressive as he likes to, but Tiafoe will keep things close. I expect a 3 setter with Tsitsipas getting his revenge for his loss and making his way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
