TennisSection previews the 2021 Gstaad Open as Casper Ruud (3) takes on Hugo Gaston in the Final on Sunday, July 25th, 2021.
Will Hugo Gaston continue to cause upsets here in Gstaad as he aims to win his maiden ATP Tour title and finally make a name for himself? Will Casper Ruud continue to dominate in his matches on clay as he aims to win his 2nd title in 2 weeks on clay? Both players can win this match if they are at their best like they’ve shown this week, but only one will be crowned the 2021 Gstaad Open Champion. Who will it be?
Hugo Gaston put on a solid comeback win against the higher ranked an in form opponent, Laslo Djere, beating the Serb in 3 sets 3-6/6-3/6-3. Hugo Gaston was just amazing on his first serve, winning 70% of points and this allowed him to then play freely on his return games. There was not much distinguishing the two throughout the match, as it was very back and forth, with only 6 points difference in total points won by both players, but its not about how many points you win, its about winning the important points. Gaston will be very happy with this performance, but he will know that he now meets the most in form clay courter of the last 2 weeks in Casper Ruud. Can he shock us all and get his maiden ATP Tour title?
Casper Ruud finally put a stop to the upset train which was Vit Kopriva this week at the 2021 Gstaad Open, beating the qualifier dominantly in straight sets 6-3/6-0. Casper Ruud was dominant on both his first and second serve, winning 80% and 62% on each respectively. Casper Ruud only lost 11 points on serve the entire match and he will be very happy that he was able to build some momentum going into the final. Casper won the Nordea Open just last week and he is now in another final, so he will be very determined to continue winning, rise up the rankings, and make a name for himself as one of the best clay-courters out there as he aims to win his third title of the year, and his fourth overall career title. However, he needs to ensure he is ready to beat a very determined Hugo Gaston.
Casper Ruud and Hugo Gaston have met 1 time before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. They met in qualifying for the Paris Masters in 2019 where Ruud won in 3 sets. That was on an indoor hard court, a surface which suits Gaston more than it does Ruud I believe, and since then, Ruud has absolutely skyrocketed in the tennis world. Gaston is in form, and he has beaten the likes of Wawrinka before, but he is no match for this form of Ruud. This is Gaston’s maiden final on the ATP Tour so he will be somewhat nervous, whilst Casper Ruud has won all the finals he has ever been in. I expect for a tight match at moments, but Casper Ruud will win his 4th ATP Tour title here at the 2021 Gstaad Open.
