TennisSection previews the 2021 Swedish Open as Casper Ruud (1) meets Federico Coria in the Final on Sunday July 18th, 2021.
Casper Ruud has been in scintillating form so far here at the 2021 Swedish Open, and since the surprising exit of Cristian Garin was widely expected to cruise to the title here. The Norwegian has lived up to that pre-tournament favorite billing, and has advanced to the Final without breaking a sweat. The only remaining obstacle in his path is the unseeded Argentine Federico Coria, who has also been very impressive here in Bastad. Can Coria pull off one of the upsets of the year and claim the title?
Casper Ruud is currently ranked #16 on the ATP Tour and is the number one seed here at the 2021 Swedish Open. The Norwegian star has had a fantastic 2021 season, winning the title in Geneva and reaching back to back ATP-1000 Semi-Finals in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. He has carried that momentum into this event in Bastad, and has crushed all opposition that he has faced, cruising past Roberto Carballes Baena in the Semi-Finals in just over an hour. Ruud has not even been tested so far, and this is something that his opponent Federico Coria will attempt to do. In this sort of form and with his aggressive baseline game, he will be extremely hard to stop here, and is widely expected to claim the title here.
As soon as the draw came out here in Bastad everyone began making plans for a blockbuster Final between Casper Ruud and the second seed Cristian Garin. However, Federico Coria didn’t get that memo, and stunned the Chilean in three sets in the Quarter-Finals. He then crushed Yannick Hanfmann in the Semi-Finals, and despite being the underdog here should not be discounted due to his form. The Argentine is currently ranked #77 on the ATP Tour and is seeking to win his first ATP title. Can he pull off yet another massive upset and defeat the top seed here in Bastad?
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a routine win for the top seeded Casper Ruud here. Federico Coria has been brilliant this week reaching his first ATP Final, but Ruud is quite simply on another level to the Argentine, and it will be too tough of an ask to expect Coria to win here. He certainly turned heads after his upset over Cristian Garin, but Casper Ruud is very strong both physically and mentally, and is very unlikely to have lapses in concentration and allow his opponent into the match. I’m expecting yet another straight-sets win for Ruud, who will become the 2021 Swedish Open Champion.
