TennisSection previews the 2021 Swedish Open as Fabio Fognini (3) meets Roberto Carballes Baena in the Round of 16 on Thursday July 15th, 2021.
An interesting match awaits us here in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Swedish Open. Enigmatic Italian Fabio Fognini will face Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain for a spot in the Quarter-Finals in Bastad. Fognini is a former top 10 player who remains a very solid player, but he has been very inconsistent lately. The Spaniard is facing the Italian at the right time, as he is struggling, can he produce the massive upset here in Bastad?
Fabio Fognini is currently ranked #31 on the ATP Tour, and is the third seed here at the 2021 Swedish Open. The Italian is a former top 10 player, but has seen his ranking slide slowly over the past few seasons. Considered one of the most talented players on tour, he has produced moments of brilliance but has also had spectacular losses and meltdowns throughout his career. Fognini has been having a down year for the most part, and will be hoping to get things turned around here in Bastad. Clay is his strongest surface and he is still very effective on it, so he enters this match against opponent Roberto Carballes Baena as the favorite to advance to the Quarter-Finals. If he is able to keep his composure and not get distracted, he has a very solid chance of winning this match.
Roberto Carballes Baena is unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open and is currently ranked #97 on the ATP Tour. Like his opponent Fabio Fognini, the Spaniard is very experienced although he has played much of his tennis on the Challenger Tour. He is considered a clay-court specialist, and will be sure to make things difficult for the Italian. Carballes Baena played well in his First Round win over Facundo Bagnis of Argentina, playing aggressive tennis and not letting his opponent into the match. His forehand is a big weapon on this surface, and he is able to generate a lot of topspin using it. If Fognini has an off day, or the Spaniard plays at a high level, this match could potentially be very interesting, despite the gap in their rankings.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it is a difficult one to predict. Usually I would back Fabio Fognini to win easily, but he really is a shadow of his former self these days, and it is tough to trust him. Roberto Carballes Baena is a fighter, and while his ranking is much lower than his opponent, he will be backing himself here, especially since Fognini has not played a match on clay for quite some time. However, I am still going to back the veteran Fognini to get the win here. He isn’t the player he once was, but he is still capable of some outstanding tennis on occasion, and it is hard to look past him here. Expect Carballes Baena to make it interesting, and potentially steal a set, but the Italian will win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Swedish Open.
