2021 Charleston Open champion Veronika Kudermetova will have a battle on her hands when she plays countrywoman Diana Shnaider on Wednesday. Who will prevail?
Veronika Kudermetova won this tournament a couple of years ago without dropping a set. She didn’t return last year and opted to play in Istanbul towards the end of the month. This year she will make her third trip to the Charleston Open with a modest set of results in recent weeks. And Kudermetova faces one of the most dangerous floaters in the draw in 19-year-old countrywoman Diana Shnaider.
Diana Shnaider, for her part, has taken out one big server in the Charleston Open draw, beating American rising star Alycia Parks in straight sets. It’s her first tour-level victory since the Australian Open where she defeated Kristina Kucova. Shnaider rose to prominence with her fabulous big-hitting display against Maria Sakkari in the second round in Melbourne, and if she can master the fifth seed Verokina Kudermetova on Wednesday, more people will take notice.
Kudermetova vs Shnaider Prediction and Pick
Veronika Kudermetova and Diana Shnaider have not played each other on the WTA Tour, with this second-round match at the Charleston Open being their first meeting. Kudermetova enters this match as a huge favorite at -400. But I’ve not been impressed by the world No. 13’s form heading to the clay swing. Truthfully, Kudermetova will look back at her last three tournaments with plenty of regrets. Defeats to Kalinina, Pliskova, and Vondrousova mean that she is now 10-7 for the season and failed to cement her top-10 status. Her confidence has taken a hit and she is playing an opponent with swagger and verve in how she carries herself around the court. Schnaider is a top talent and clay is her best surface. This match could have an upset written all over it.
