Matthew Ebden put on a very solid comeback performance in the Quarter-Finals, shocking everyone who was watching the match by beating Karen Khachanov in 3 sets 4-6/6-4/6-2. Karen Khachanov was in control of the entire match up until half way through the second set, when Ebden just started to wear down the Russian. This was one of the biggest victories for Matthew Ebden in his career, and I am sure this is giving him a lot of confidence, and motivation, to continue working so hard on the tennis court. Ebden will have to ensure he does not start the match as slowly as he did against Khachanov as now he meets a player who will not give you anything once he goes ahead in a match, Daniil Medvedev. Can Matthew Ebden cause what would be an extremely shocking upset victory here in Marseille to give himself a title shot?
Daniil Medvedev put on a very dominant performance in the Quarter-Finals, beating the up and coming superstar Jannik Sinner in straight sets 6-2/6-4. We were all a bit unsure whether Medvedev would push himself to his limits and give it his all in this match as it is a smaller tournament for him and he had just come off a shocking loss to Dusan Lajovic last week at the Rotterdam Open. However, Medvedev showed great integrity and determination on Friday. Medvedev knows that if he is playing his best tennis, he can win this title with his eyes closed, and I am sure he is very motivated to do exactly that as he will most likely expect to meet his biggest rival in Tennis, Stefanos Tsitsipas, if he is to make his way to the Final. Will Medvedev add yet another trophy to his cabinet this week in Marseille?
This is going to be the first meeting between Daniil Medvedev and Matthew Ebden, and I am sure it is going to be a very interesting encounter. Ebden has a lot of power behind his shots, and he also has a lot of experience on the ATP Tour, having played over 210 ATP Tour matches throughout his 15-year career. We were all a bit wary of Daniil Medvedev entering this tournament after his shocking loss to Dusan Lajovic last week, however, Medvedev has come out motivated and in form here. This will definitely be a tight match, and both players will give it their best in this Semi-Final at the 2021 Marseille Open, but at the end of the day, I see Daniil Medvedev getting this match done in straight sets to book himself a spot in the Final on Sunday.
