TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Garbine Muguruza (11) meets Ons Jabeur (21) in the Third Round on Friday July 2nd, 2021.
A very interesting match is upon us here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as eleventh seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza will face One Jabeur of Tunisia for a spot in the Round of 16. The two players have very contrasting styles and are fierce competitors so we are in for a battle here. Muguruza is a former champion here at Wimbledon and in her current form should be a serious contender for another title. Can the smooth playing Tunisian cause the upset and advance here?
Garbine Muguruza has been one of the most outstanding players on the WTA Tour over the past decade, and has won multiple Grand Slam titles. The Spaniard is a former champion here at Wimbledon, and will be one of the main contenders for the crown this year. She started her 2021 Wimbledon Championships in strong fashion, crushing Fiona Ferro 6-0, 6-1 in only 51 minutes and following that up with an equally dominant win over Lesley Kerkhove. Muguruza is very much a confidence based player, and is very difficult to beat when she is playing well. Her game is perfectly suited for this surface and she enters this match against the tricky Ons Jabeur as the favorite.
Ons Jabeur is the 21st seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked a career-high #24 on the WTA Tour. The Tunisian has been in similarly dominant form to her opponent Garbine Muguruza, by destroying Rebecca Peterson and Venus Williams in straight sets. She has a very unique style that is effective on the grass, with flat groundstrokes and a very good backhand slice. Her ability at the net is a real asset on this surface also, and she is an extremely tricky opponent to face. While she enters this match against Muguruza as the underdog, she certainly is capable of causing the upset here if the sometimes erratic Spaniard has an off-day.
This is the second meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with Garbine Muguruza leading the head to head 1-0. They last met in Hobart last year, with the Spaniard winning an extremely close match 7-6 in the third. I expect a similarly tricky match here, with both women in outstanding form. This match really can go either way, but I am going to choose Muguruza here as she is a multiple Grand Slam winner and has much more experience at this level. Ons Jabeur is a very tough opponent to face and will make it very interesting, but I’m backing Muguruza to edge it out here as she seeks yet another Wimbledon title.
