TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Pedro Martinez faces Cristian Garin in the Round of 32 on Friday, July 2nd 2021.
Will Pedro Martinez pull off the upset? Will Cristian Garin turn his clay court mastery into even more grass court mastery? This match will be an interesting one, as while Garin is definitely the favorite, so far he’s shown a high level of tennis, and it will be interesting to see where else he can contend outside of clay. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Pedro Martinez comes into the third round with a little confidence, having defeated a higher-ranked opponent in the first round. Like his opponent, Martinez prefers the clay but seems to have adjusted well to make it to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. His next opponent has been playing at a great level, and it will be a tough match for him. However, neither player is too experienced on the grass, and his higher ranked opponent isn’t an extremely heavy favorite, I do think if Garin’s level is lower, anything can happen. Martinez didn’t have extremely good service stats, and someone like Garin is super good off the return, so he’ll have to up those numbers for starters. Garin has also been known on the grass to go on sprees of poor service, so Pedo will need to jump on every opportunity he sees.
Cristian Garin comes into this match with what you would hope is a lot of confidence, he has a much higher ranking, and while he should be able to get through to the fourth round and prove himself as an all-courter, it won’t be a free win by any means. He’ll need to try and make as many first serves as possible, and dictate his opponent around the court as he’s able to do so on the clay. If he can do that, he can most likely knock out the first set and then storm through using his brilliant returns. I expect him to put up a strong showing, it will be tough for him assuming he does make it through to the fourth round though, as his opponents will be getting much stronger than Martinez.
Cristian Garin and Pedro Martinez have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Even if they did have a meeting or two, it wouldn’t really hint at anything. Garin will remain the favorite to come through this match pretty easily, and I just don’t see Martinez being able to push him much. He’ll need to display his best tennis and hope that Cristian is having a bad day, otherwise, I think the result of the match looks to be rather clear, with Cristian Garin moving on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
