Will Maria Osorio Serrano knock out another seed? Will Aryna Sabalenka go through and make a deep run? Friday’s contest will be a good one, to put one of the top-ranked players in the world over a teenager who seems to be in hot form. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Maria Osorio Serrano is an unknown player on the WTA Tour, being ranked barely inside the top 100 and at only 19 years old. She came through her last match against 32nd seeded Alexandrova relatively easily, putting on a good display on serve. I expect her to maintain her very high first serve percentage, but against someone like Sabalenka, it will be hard to win as many. She obviously isn’t the favorite, and while she can push Sabalenka, as we saw in her last match she isn’t at her best, she probably won’t be able to do much unless she does some out of the box playing. She’ll need to throw Aryna off her game, because as we saw her opponent is not playing her best tennis, so she’ll need to try to get in her head and make her doubt herself, otherwise, I think she’ll get rolled through pretty easily.
Aryna Sabalenka came through to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, defeating crowd favorite Katie Boulter after dropping the first set. Her service numbers were kind of average, and while her next match shouldn’t be too much of an issue, she still should try to stay solid on serve, and just jump on her opponent’s serve and run straight at those opportunities. I think she has a good shot of making a deep run here, and while never being a super good grass court player herself, she still has found decent form and is performing well with it already. With a favorable draw, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Aryna to get through Osorio Serrano.
Maria Osorio Serrano and Aryna Sabalenka have never played before, and this will be their first career meeting. Even if they did have one or two prior meetings, it wouldn’t give away much, as Sabalenka is such a heavy favorite it’s hard to go against her. She’ll need to go into a slump and Osorio Serrano would have to jump all over her, go straight for any opportunties. I just don’t really see her losing, while we have had some pretty big upsets, I expect Sabalenka to go through pretty easily and get some confidence going into the latter stages.
