TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Adrian Mannarino meets Sam Querrey in the Semi-Finals on Friday June 25th, 2021.
A very unexpected Semi-Final awaits us at the 2021 Mallorca Open as unseeded pair Adrian Mannarino and Sam Querry face off for a spot in the Final. Neither player would have been expected to reach this late stage in the competition but they have played outstanding tennis and fully deserve to be here. Who will get the win and advance to their first Final of 2021?
Adrian Mannarino is ranked #42 on the ATP Tour, and is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Frenchman has been having an inconsistent season, but is a very solid player and a dangerous opponent on all surfaces. He has been in decent form on the grass so far, reaching the Round of 16 at Queen’s, and defeating the in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round here in Mallorca. Mannarino then received a stroke of luck when second seeded Dominic Thiem retired from their match due to injury after leading 5-2. Next up was a stern test in the form of Feliciano Lopez, an elite grass court player. Mannarino returned serve extremely well, and was decisive when it mattered most, and was able to get the close three set win. With his superior ranking he will be hoping to get the win here, but knows that his opponent Sam Querrey is extremely dangerous on this surface.
Sam Querrey is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is ranked #60 in the ATP world rankings. The American has been in mixed form over the last few years, and has seen his ranking plummet from a career high #11 on the ATP Tour. Despite his poor recent form, he has been impressive so far this grass court season, reaching the Semis in Stuttgart. The big serving American is a former Wimbledon Semi-Finalist and Queen’s champion, and is a much better grass court player than his ranking suggests. Querrey had a tough three set win over Carballes Baena before the Halle Champion Ugo Humbert retired to hand him a spot in the Quarters. He then continued his impressive streak by defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in the Quarters, and will be full of confidence here against Adrian Mannarino, and will surely back himself to get the win here.
This will be the seventh meeting between the two ATP Tour veterans, with the head to head series tied 3-3. Interestingly, Mannarino won the first three meetings while Querrey won the last three. They have never faced each other on this surface and this is set to be a close and exciting encounter. This is likely to come down to the thinnest of margins, and in that case I am backing Sam Querrey here. The American has struck form at the right time and with his serve he is going to make things very difficult for his opponent Adrian Mannarino. I do expect a close match, but the American’s serve will be decisive and he should advance to the Final here at the 2021 Mallorca Open.
