TennisSection previews the 2021 Queen’s Open as Denis Shapovalov (2) meets Frances Tiafoe in the Quarter-Finals on Friday June 18th, 2021.
An exciting match is expected here at the 2021 Queen’s Open as second seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov will face Frances Tiafoe of the USA in the Quarter-Finals. Both men play a very dynamic brand of tennis and this match will surely be full of flashy winners and power tennis. Who will get the win here to advance to the Semi-Finals?
Denis Shapovalov is the second seed here at the 2021 Queen’s Open, and is currently ranked #14 on the ATP Tour. The young Canadian has enjoyed a breakout on the ATP Tour over the past two seasons, and will be pushing for a spot in the top 10 in the near future. Shapovalov has looked in good form on the grass, reaching the Quarter-Finals last week in Stuttgart before falling to eventual champion Marin Cilic. He then cruised past Feliciano Lopez in the Round of 16 here, showing that he is becoming more and more comfortable on the surface after being pushed to three sets last week by the same opponent. He enters this match as the favorite against Frances Tiafoe, but should be wary of the big American who has also had some time to get acclimated to the grass, winning a challenger title in Nottingham last week.
Frances Tiafoe is unseeded here at the 2021 Queen’s Open, and is ranked #65 in the world. A former top 30 player, he has suffered with loss of form over the past year and has seen his ranking slide in the process. After a difficult year so far in 2021, the American came over to England early to prepare for the grass court season and has already claimed a challenger title on the surface, building some momentum ahead of the Queen’s Open and Wimbledon. He started strongly here defeating the dangerous Aljaz Bedene in three sets in his opening match before cruising to a straight-sets win over Viktor Troicki. While his ranking is much lower than his opponent Denis Shapovalov, he should not be underestimated as he is a very talented player, in good form at the moment.
The pair has played each other four times before on the ATP Tour, with Denis Shapovalov leading the head to head 3-1. Both men are in good form at the moment and it is set to be a fascinating clash between two explosive players. All things considered, I am going with Denis Shapovalov to get the win here, despite Frances Tiafoe’s good recent form. He has been outstanding over the past year and a half, and is the better player at the moment. The American is playing very well and will pose a formidable challenge, but I expect Shapovalov to get the win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Queen’s Open.
