TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Masters as JannikSinner takes on Tommy Paul in the first round on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.
Italy’s Jannik Sinner is chasing his 20th win of the season when he takes on World No. 34 Tommy Paul. Sinner’s sole visit to the Madrid Masters before this year came last season where he was knocked out in the second round. Can he avoid another early exit in his second trip?
Jannik Sinner hasn’t quite managed to hit those lofty heights from 2021, but his progress hasn’t stalled. Sinner has secured 19 wins in the first four months of the new season, although he will be keen to improve on his four quarterfinal showings. The Italian young gun blossomed in Australia, going unbeaten at the ATP Cup before reaching his second Grand Slam quarterfinal in Melbourne. However, things took a turn for the worse in North America. A foot blister and an illness cut short his stay in both Indian Wells and Miami Masters respectively. His clay-court season began with a flourish in Monte Carlo where he reached the last eight, stunning last year’s finalist Andrey Rublev in the process. Sinner will be targeting a very productive week at the Madrid Masters when he takes on Tommy Paul.
American Tommy Paul hasn’t had the best of starts to his clay-court season. Paul is 1-2 ahead of his second trip to the Madrid Masters. He was beaten by Nicky Kyrgios in the round of 16 in Houston and most recently by Richard Gasquet in Estoril. And in between, he took a week off from playing at the Monte Carlo Masters. With a record that is hardly inspiring, Paul will now have to trust on his game to take down the hard-hitting JannikSinner.
Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Madrid Masters will be their first official meeting. This would have been a close contest on hard courts, with Paul’s stock rising sharply following mammoth wins over Berrettini, Zverev and Karen Khachanovthis season. While the altitude in Madrid could help him fire flat at will, Sinner is clearly a superior player at everything the American will bring to the table.
