TennisSection previews the 2021 Queen’s Open as Matteo Berrettini (1) meets Stefano Travaglia in the Round of 32 on Tuesday June 15th 2021.
Will Stefano Travaglia shock us all and get the best of his fellow Italian here to give himself a boost of confidence in the top half of the draw? Will Matteo Berrettini continue putting on strong performances but now on grass where he originally made his breakthrough in 2019 at the Stuttgart Open but do it here at the 2021 Queen’s Open? Both players will make this a very entertaining match as all All-Italian matchups usually are, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16. Who will it be?
Stefano Travaglia did not have a good time on the clay, losing in the Round of 128 at the 2021 French Open in straight sets to Alex de Minaur. Travaglia is a very good player, but good in terms of ability to challenge in smaller ATP 250 and Challenger Tour tournaments. Stefano Travaglia’s best surface is not on grass, with him playing at his best on clay, but he has not done that in 2021. Travaglia is solid in all departments, but he does not have 1 specific aspect to his game which dominates and allows him to get on top of matches. Will he be able to shock us all and beat his fellow in-form Italian in Matteo Berrettini at the 2021 Queen’s Open?
Matteo Berrettini put on a great run at the 2021 French Open, reaching the Quarter-finals where he lost to Novak Djokovic but still put up a fight. Matteo has so much raw power through his serve and his forehand. Recently, Matteo has been working hard on his backhand to add some variation to the shot and give himself a chance to hurt his opponents from that end as well. We should all remember that Matteo loves to play on grass, with his first title on the ATP Tour coming on grass at the 2019 Stuttgart Open. Matteo will want to impress as well this year on grass, and I am sure he will feel confident coming into this first match against Stefano Travaglia.
Matteo Berrettini and Stefano Travaglia have met 5 times before, with Stefano Travaglia leading the head to head 4-1. Although Travaglia leads their head to head by a lot, the last time he won against Matteo was in 2016. Since then, Matteo has become a different beast and he is so hard to beat, especially in fast paced conditions. Matteo beat him in straight sets the last time they met last year, and I expect for him to come out here at the 2021 Queen’s Open to do the exact same thing and make his way to the Round of 16.
