TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31) meets Tamara Zidansek in the Semi-Finals on Thursday June 10th, 2021.
A very surprising Semi-Final is upon us here at the 2021 French Open as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russian will meet Slovenian Tamara Zidansek. This is not a Semi that anyone would have expected, but both women have played outstanding tennis this week and fully deserve to be here. They are both at this stage in a Grand Slam for the first time in their careers, who will get the win and advance to the Final here at Roland Garros 2021?
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is ranked #32 in the world, and is seeded #31 here at the 2021 French Open. Like her opponent Tamara Zidansek, the Russian has caused some upsets here at Roland Garros to arrive in the Semi-Final, notably defeating one of the pre-tournament favorites Aryna Sabalenka in the Third Round before a shocking comeback victory over Victoria Azarenka in the Round of 16. A former Quarter-Finalist here at the French Open ten years ago, she has finally surpassed that and will be delighted to have reached the Semis this year. She was outstanding in her come from behind win against Elena Rybakina in the Quarter-Finals, coming from a set down to win 6-7, 6-2, 9-7. Due to her vast experience she will enter this match against Zidansek as the favorite, as long as fatigue is not a factor here due to her spending a lot of time on court.
Tamara Zidansek is ranked #85 in the WTA world rankings and is unseeded here at Roland Garros 2021. The Slovenian started her 2021 French Open campaign with a huge upset in the First Round, defeating sixth seeded Bianca Andreescu in a marathon three setter. Zidansek had yet another three setter in the Quarter-Finals, defeating Paula Badosa 8-6 in the third set in what was a very impressive win. She certainly will be feeling some fatigue here, and hopefully will be able to recuperate before the Semi-Final. Luckily for her, her opponent Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has also spent a lot of time on court and will likely be feeling the effects here. Tamara Zidansek should be considered the underdog for this match, but due to the tremendous fighting spirit that she has displayed so far shouldn’t be discounted.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, and is shaping up to be a very close encounter. Both women have had similarly difficult paths to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 French Open, causing quite a few upsets along the way. While both players are in the Semis of a major for the first time, I am going with the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to get the win here. She is very experienced, and I think that will be the difference here. She will be less affected by nerves as her opponent Tamara Zidansek, and I expect her to get a very close win here, advancing to the Final here at Roland Garros 2021.
