TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Iga Swiatek (8) meets Maria Sakkari (17) in the Quarter-finals on Wednesday, June 9th 2021.
Will Maria Sakkari come out here ready to cause yet another upset at Roland Garros as she continues to make a name for herself? Will Iga Swiatek dominate as she is known to do on clay as she aims to get one step closer to her second Grand Slam title here at the 2021 French Open? Both players have played some amazing tennis here at Roland Garros, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
Maria sakkari was in absolutely great fashion in the Round of 16, beating the 2020 Roland Garros Finalist, Sofia Kenin, in straight sets 6-1/6-3. Maria Sakkari was playing well, but Sofia Kenin was also playing very poorly, hitting 9 double faults. Maria Sakkari was able to convert 6 of 10 break points, and was winning 84% of first serve points. However, Maria Sakkari will have to look at this match as both a positive and a negative. Maria was only winning 43% of seconds serves and she was handed a fair few of the breaks she got by double faults from Kenin. Now that she meets Iga Swiatek in the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open, Sakkari will have to raise those serving statistics if she is to stand a chance here.
Iga Swiatek is just on another level. The Pole is yet to lose a set here at the 2021 French Open, and she consistently dominated opponents. In the Round of 16, Iga Swiatek beat Marta Kostyuk in straight sets 6-3/6-4. Iga is getting bettwe with every match that she is playing, and now that Serena Williams is out of the tournament, she will know that she is the only player left in the Top 10 in the world. Iga Swiatek loves these clay conditions, and she is so experienced at such a young age. However, she now meets a player who is also quite experienced, perhaps not in a title winning capacity, in Maria Sakkari. Can Iga prevent the upset from the power hitting Greek star?
Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari have never met before, with this being their first encounter. It will definitely be a very interesting encounter as they have both played very well all tournament. However, Iga Swiatek is levels above anyone on clay at the moment. Maria Sakkari is very strong and will get some big points under her belt, but serving poorly on her second serve will not get her anywhere against a very strong returner and mover in Iga Swiatek. Iga knows she is the top dog in the tournament now and she will use all of her skills to get one step closer to retaining her Roland Garros title.
