Indian Wells 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Grigor Dimitrov Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Andrey Rublev takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 18th, 2022.

Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This will be a very fascinating one, where the powerhouse continues to storm through the draw as he takes on a guy who is in very good form himself. Who will triumph to move through to the semifinals at Indian Wells 2022?

Andrey Rublev took down a very dangerous opponent in straight sets, not dropping a set so far in Indian Wells and continuing his great run winning Marseille and Dubai. He doesn’t have an easy one ahead of him, but it will be an easier one than his last one statistically speaking. Grigor Dimitrov has taken down some great players, but I don’t really like his odds here against Rublev. I think Rublev is a great matchup for Dimitrov as he really crushes the ball and on a slow court like this Dimitrov won’t really have the help of the court to take it early and keep it as low. I think Rublev is gonna hit through him in every aspect and not let Dimitrov play his aggressive game, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy for Rublev as he aims to make a 3rd career appearance in a masters 1000 semifinal at Indian Wells 2022.

Grigor Dimitrov got an impressive win over John Isner who was definitely the favorite going into that match, putting on a clinic of aggressive tennis. We saw Dimitrov play great last year, but losing out to Norrie quite easily in the semifinals. I expect a similar result here, but definitely a closer scoreline. I don’t think Dimitrov is too great of a power absorber and is more of a guy who wants to create his own pace to be aggressive, and with how consistently hard and deep in the court Rublev hits, it’s gonna be hard for him to slice too much and come to the net as he will want to do. Dimitrov is also generally a very inconsistent opponent so we never really know what we’ll see from him, but I do think he’ll bring some good stuff to fight for a place in the last four at Indian Wells 2022.

Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov have met 4 times before, with the head to head being tied at 2-2. They met four times before Rublev came out as a great player and when Dimitrov was already an established top 10 player, Rublev won both of their meetings on the slower surfaces anyhow, even taking him down at the US Open. I just don’t think Dimitrov can play his game against him, I think his serve will sit up nicely for Rublev to crush, and even if he hits a lot of slices, I think that the court really will help Rublev deal with them and anything else Dimitrov throws at him as he aims to continue playing his famous first-strike tennis at Indian Wells 2022.
