French Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Tuesday June 8th, 2021.

A blockbuster Quarter-Final is upon us here at the 2021 French Open, as top five players Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas face off for a spot in the Semis. Both men have been outstanding this week at Roland Garros and will be hoping to continue their runs here. Will it be the second seeded Medvedev getting yet another surprise win? Or will one of the pre-tournament favorites Tsitsipas advance?

Danill Medvedev is ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings, and is also the number two seed here at Roland Garros 2021. Despite his high ranking, he was not expected to do much here in Paris due to his open disdain for the clay court surface. However, the tall Russian shocked the tennis world with his outstanding play, and has steamrolled his way to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 French Open. After defeating Alexander Bublik, Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka to reach the Round of 16 he was widely expected to go down to highly rated Cristian Garin. Medvedev clearly had other plans and was able to come away with a crushing straight sets victory. Despite his outstanding play so far, he enters this match against Stefanos Tsitsipas as the underdog, and will have to be at his absolute best to come away with yet another win here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked #5 in the ATP world rankings and is seeded fifth here at the 2021 French Open. The Greek star has established himself as a bona fide star this year with some very strong performances, and currently leads the ATP Race to Turin. After winning the Monte-Carlo Masters he has announced himself as a true contender for the title here at the French Open, and has backed up that tag with some extraordinary performances so far. In the Round of 16 he defeated the solid Pablo Carreno Busta in three comfortable sets, setting up a clash with Daniil Medvedev. Despite his opponent having the higher ranking, Tsitsipas has the much better clay court pedigree and is considered the favorite for this match. His powerful game should allow him to dominate the Russian from the baseline once he can keep his error count low.

This will be the eighth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Daniil Medvedev dominating the head to head series 6-1. Despite most people considering Tsitsipas the heavy favorite for this match it is interesting to note that the Russian has won their only career meeting on clay, and Tsitsipas has only won three sets against Medvedev. Despite that, I am still backing the Greek star to get the victory here. Medvedev has been outstanding so far here at the 2021 French Open, but Tsitsipas has the much better clay court game and record, and is likely to come away with a hard fought win here. Although the Russian has openly stated that he hates the surface and has had poor results, it would be unwise to ignore his form here at Roland Garros so I do think that he will win a set, ultimately falling in four or five close sets.
