Sixteenth seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov begins his French Open 2021 campaign against Marcos Giron. The former top five player has never made it past the Fourth Round here at Roland Garros, and will have his sights set on passing that milestone. Can the unseeded American Marcos Giron stop him by causing the massive upset? Or will Dimitrov advance here at Roland Garros 2021 as expected?
Grigor Dimitrov is currently ranked #17 in the ATP world rankings and has a career high ranking of #3. The Bulgarian star has been playing some good tennis over the past few seasons, and has re-established himself among the top players in the world. The winner of eight ATP titles, he has had some very consistent results recently without winning a title since 2017, and will be hoping to change that very soon. Despite a strong start to the year he has been poor since the start of the clay court season, with a Quarter-Final appearance in Geneva preceded by back to back First Round losses in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. Dimitrov enters this match against Marcos Giron as the heavy favorite, and will be expected to get the better of his unseeded opponent here at the 2021 French Open.
Marcos Giron is unseeded here at the 2021 French Open, and is currently ranked #82 in the world rankings. The twenty-seven year old American has had a tough season so far, and it is expected to get even tougher as he is drawn against former world number three Grigor Dimitrov here at Roland Garros 2021. Other than on the Challenger Tour and Qualifying events, Giron has won just one match on clay this season and is in miserable form at the moment. He is capable of some solid tennis at times but is considered more of a hard court player. All of this is to say that he should be considered the massive underdog here against Dimitrov but should not be totally overlooked due to his tremendous fighting spirit.
This will be the first time the two players have met on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This looks like a mismatch on paper, and I expect that it will be in reality also. Grigor Dimitrov has traditionally struggled on clay throughout his career, but has some decent results on the surface. Marcos Giron is still very inexperienced at this level and quite frankly is not at the same level as his opponent. Grigor Dimitrov has his sights set on doing well here at Roland Garros 2021, as he has never advanced past the fourth round and I think he will get there this time. Dimitrov will win comfortably here, advancing to the Second Round at the 2021 French Open.
