TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Diego Schwartzman (10) meets Yen-Hsun Lu in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, June 1st 2021.
Will Yen-Hsun Lu shock everyone here at the 2021 French Open by causing the huge upset in the Round of 128 against a clay lover in Schwartzman? Will Diego Schwartzman start his Roland Garros 2021 campaign off strongly as he looks to defend his Semi-final ranking points from last year’s tournament? It will be interesting to see where Diego’s game is at here at the start of Roland Garros, but I am sure he will be just fine here.
Yen-Hsun Lu is not a well known player on the ATP Tour anymore as he has really fallen down the rankings over the last few years. Having only played in 3 tournaments this year, all on hard courts, Yen-Hsun Lu has gone 1-3 in all of his matches this year, and he will have to raise his level drastically here if he wants to get anything going at Roland Garros. Yen-Hsun Lu has not played on clay this year on the ATP Tour, and being thrown in right from the start against someone like Diego Schwartzman in the Round of 128 in a Best of 5 format is only going to be bad for the Taiwan native player.
Diego Schwartzman has been very underwhelming this season on the ATP Tour, where he has gone 2-5 in clay-court tournaments since the Monte-Carlo Masters. Diego is practically the opposite of what he was last year, where he reached the Final of the Rome Masters, as well as the Semi-finals of Roland Garros. Diego Schwartzman, however, will be happy with his Round of 128 match here at the 2021 French Open as he meets a very poor ranked and unknown player in Yen-Hsun Lu, so he at least will have the confidence that he can make it to the Round of 64. Diego is one of the best clay courters on his day, and he needs to find the consistency which we all love from him.
Diego Schwartzman and Yen-Hsun Lu have met 1 time before, with Yen-Hsun Lu leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2016 on a hard court where Lu won 6-4/6-0. Although Yen-Hsun leads their head to head, it has been 5 years since that match, and since then Diego has become a top 10 calibre player (even though he has not shown that this year). Yen-Hsun is now ranked 679 and he is only in here due to a protected ranking. I don’t see anything going for Yen-Hsun Lu, and I see Diego getting a critical win for his confidence under his belt to get some momentum going here at Roland Garros.
