TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Andrey Rublev (7) meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, June 1st 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff bounce back after a bad week at the Parma Open in his preparation for Roland Garros? Will Andrey Rublev be able to continue dominating and improving on the ATP Tour as he looks to have a successful run here at the 2021 French Open and improve on his 2020 performance? Both players can win this match if they are at their highest level, however, only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of Roland Garros 2021. Who will it be?
Jan-Lennard Struff had a pretty poor week at the 2021 Parma Open recently, being taken to a 3rd set by a player ranked in the 400-500 range, and then losing in his second match against Tommy Paul in straight sets. Now at the 2021 French Open, Jan-Lennard Struff will want to improve on his level, but I am not sure he will be able to get anything going as he has a tough draw from the start with Andrey Rublev. Jan-Lennard Struff is experienced, but his big swings and hard hitting is more geared towards hard court and grass court tournaments. If he wants to succeed here at Roland Garros, he will have to shock us all.
Andrey Rublev had put on some solid performances at the 2021 Rome Open a few weeks ago, reaching the Quarter-finals before he lost in a very tight match against Lorenzo Sonego. Andrey Rublev is very solid on clay, and this year he has been able to reach the Final of a Masters 1000 and the Quarter-finals of both another Masters 1000 and an ATP 500. Andrey Rublev will want to give himself a shot at meeting some of the big names in this side of the draw, like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Roger Federer. However, he needs to be playing well right from the start as he meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 128 of Roland Garros.
Andrey Rublev and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 5 times before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 3-2. They met 2 weeks ago at the Rome Open where Rublev won in 3 sets 6-7/6-1/6-4. Jan-Lennard had started that match off strongly, but in the long run he was not able to hang with Rublev’s stamina. Here at the 2021 French Open, I don’t see Jan-Lennard being able to hang in this very tough Best of 5 sets format against Rublev. Andrey Rublev loves clay, and he will be determined to impress here at Roland Garros, and he will not let anyone stand in his way in the first couple of matches. I think Struff will get 1 set under his belt because he has done so in his last 2 matches against Rublev, but Andrey will still win and make his way to the Round of 64.
