TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Grigor Dimitrov (4) meets Pablo Cuevas (Q) in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, May 20th, 2021.
Will Pablo Cuevas continue to impress this week in Geneva as he has not lost a set yet and has had to come through qualifying? Will Grigor Dimitrov back up that strong performance in his first match here at the 2021 Geneva Open? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
Pablo Cuevas cruised through his Round of 16 match against the young gun Arthur Cazaux, showing the newbie how the veterans play the sport. Pablo is always entertaining to watch, especially on clay where he is able to hit some of the best shots the game has ever seen. Pablo Cuevas has had to come through qualifying to participate in the 2021 Geneva Open and he has backed that up with solid performances all week. Now, Cuevas meets an extremely tough opponent in Grigor Dimitrov on his day, and I wonder whether his flamboyant style of play will be able to come out on top.
Grigor Dimitrov beat the in form Ilya Ivashka in the Round of 16 in straight sets 6-4/6-4. Although the scoreline looks quite easy, Grigor Dimitrov had to fight a mini-comeback in the second set where Dimitrov was up 5-0 before Ivashka fought back to get it close enough to be back on serve. Grigor Dimitrov was able to maintain his composure during the extremely tight moments, and in the end this paid dividends as he is now in the Quarter-finals. This week at the 2021 Geneva Open is important for Grigor to gain some confidence again in his game as he has struggled in all other clay tournaments this year. However, he meets an unpredictable Pablo Cuevas now who can definitely ruffle some feathers.
Grigor Dimitrov and Pablo Cuevas have met 4 times before, with Grigor Dimitrov leading the head to head 3-1. The last time they met was at the 2019 Australian Open where Dimitrov won in 4 sets. Although the only time they played on clay, Cuevas won, I still see Grigor Dimitrov coming out on top in this one. Pablo is going to have to play 2 matches in one day due to rain delays yesterday meaning his Round of 16 match was postponed to Thursday morning. At his age, it is harder to recover for another tough match in the same day, therefore Dimitrov will have more energy and be ready to make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open.
