TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Denis Shapovalov (2) meets Marco Cecchinato (Q) in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021.
Will Marco Cecchinato be able to get some solid wins under his belt on clay as he looks to find his way back into the Top 100 after some tough years on the ATP Tour? Will Denis Shapovalov bounce back after one of the toughest losses of his career in Rome? Both players can win this match if they are playing at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open. Who will win?
Marco Cecchinato was cruising through his match in the Round of 32, beating Stefano Travaglia 6-3/3-0 before his fellow Italian had to retire from the match due to injury. Marco Cecchinato is nowhere near the level he used to be unfortunately, as he was such an amazing player to watch in the 2018 clay court season, where he made his way to the Semi-finals of Roland Garros, beating Novak Djokovic along the way. Marco Cecchinato is now ranked outside of the Top 100 and he will want to get himself back in it desperately if he still wants to keep himself in contention for easy entry to big tournaments such as Grand Slams. However, he now meets Denis Shapovalov who will be determined to bounce back from a tough loss last week.
Denis Shapovalov will be feeling extremely down on himself after losing that match last week against Rafael Nadal in the Round of 16 in Rome. Denis won the first set easily, then was up a break in the second set cruising, then lost the second set, then was up a break again in the third set, then had two match points on Nadal’s serve, but ended up losing the match in the third set tiebreak. That match was a rollercoaster for both players and the fans. Denis Shapovalov should have won that match but what was clear was that the longer a match goes, the worse he plays. The Canadian does not have the stamina that the best players such as Tsitsipas and Zverev have, and if he wants to reach their level, he needs to fight for 3-4 hours on court. Denis needs to beat Marco Cecchinato.
Denis Shapovalov and Marco Cecchinato have met 1 time before, with Marco Cecchinato leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2017 on clay where Marco won 6-3/6-4. Although Marco won that match, it was 4 years ago and he was in much better form back then. Denis is desperate for this win, and he will be very determined to put it all on the line to bounce back here and not let himself get further into a slump at the 2021 Geneva Open right before Roland Garros towards the end of the month. I expect for it to be a straight sets match for Shapovalov as he needs to get some quick wins under his belt.
