TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Cristian Garin meets Lloyd Harris in the First Round on Monday May 10th, 2021.
A tough match is expected here at the 2021 Rome Open as Cristian Garin of Chile will face South African Lloyd Harris in the First Round. Can Garin continue his good form from the Madrid Open by getting the win here? Or will Harris be able to cause the stunning upset?
Cristian Garin is the Chilean #1 and is currently ranked #25 in the ATP world rankings. A former junior Roland Garros champion, he has established himself as one of the top clay court players in the world, already winning five titles on the surface at only 24 years of age. He has been having a mixed season so far in 2021, winning a title in Santiago but struggling at several key tournaments. The Chilean has seemingly turned his fortunes around recently, and is coming off a strong run to the Quarter-Finals last week at the Madrid Masters. Garin will be hoping for yet another good showing here at the 2021 Rome Open, and while his opponent Lloyd Harris is a good player, the Chilean enters this match as the strong favorite due to it being on his preferred surface.
Lloyd Harris had recently broken into the top 50 of the world rankings, and currently sits at #54. Better known for his hard court success, he will be hoping for a good week here at the 2021 Rome Open, to reclaim his position in the top 50. The South African possesses a huge serve and a powerful forehand, however those weapons are slightly nullified on this slower surface here in Rome. While he has been having a solid season in 2021, his form has been miserable on clay, with a 2-8 record and he will be up against it here again, as his opponent Cristian Garin is an extremely accomplished clay-court specialist and has built some serious momentum. Harris enters this match as the underdog and it will take a remarkable effort on his part to get anything out of this match.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Lloyd Harris leading the head to head series 1-0. They played each other in 2020 in Adelaide, with the South African winning a very close three setter. However, we cannot read too much into this as it was on an outdoor hard court. While Harris won that meeting, I expect Cristian Garin to win this match comfortably. The Chilean is a much more accomplished clay court player than his opponent, and has all the tools needed to defeat his opponent. His heavy groundstrokes should be way too much for Harris to handle and this should be a straightforward win for Garin here. Cristian Garin will win this match in straight sets and advance to the Second Round here at the 2021 Rome Open.
