TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Matteo Berrettini (8) meets Cristian Garin (16) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday May 7th, 2021.
A huge battle is on our hands in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Madrid Open. Eighth seeded Matteo Berrettini will face sixteenth seed Cristian Garin for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Both men have been outstanding so far in Madrid, who will get the upper hand here and advance to their first Masters-1000 Semi of the year?
Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked #10 in the ATP world rankings, and has previously been ranked as high as #8. After struggling for a few months since returning to the ATP Tour, he finally is showing signs of the form that took him to the top 10. After an outstanding week in Belgrade where he won his fourth ATP title, he has continued strongly here at the 2021 Madrid Open, with straight sets wins over Fabio Fognini and Federico Delbonis to reach this stage. He has been dominating his opponents with the strong one-two punch with his serve and forehand, and has been a lot more consistent than usual. With his firepower, he can be a very difficult opponent regardless of the surface and has an excellent chance of reaching the Semi-Final here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
Cristian Garin is currently ranked #25 in the ATP world rankings, and is the sixteenth seed here. The Chilean is widely considered to be one of the best clay court players in the world, and already has five ATP titles on the surface in his young career. However, that form has not usually translated well to the clay court Masters events, and this will be his first clay Quarter-Final in those bigger events. Garin was impressive in his three set win over second seeded Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 16, controlling the rallies with his heavy topspin forehand and powerful flat backhand to run away with the win in the third set. While Matteo Berrettini is in great form and considered the favorite in this match, Garin has an excellent chance of reaching his First ATP-1000 Semi-Final here. If he can keep his unforced error count low and attack his opponent’s weaker backhand side, he has a good chance of the upset and advancing here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
This will be the third meeting between the two players in their careers, with the head to head series being tied 1-1. They played twice in 2019, with Matteo Berrettini winning the encounter on hard, and Garin winning in clay. Both men are in fantastic form and it is difficult to pick a winner as I think they are equally capable of winning. Despite Berrettini being in fine form including winning a title last week, I am going with Cristian Garin to spring the upset here. The Chilean’s heavy groundstrokes will spell trouble for the Italian and I think he is a slightly better player on this surface at the moment. I expect a titanic battle and three sets are likely, but I am going with Cristian Garin to win here at the 2021 Madrid Open, and reaching his first ATP-1000 Semi-Final.
