TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Denis Shapovalov (11) meets Alexander Bublik in the Second Round on Tuesday May 4th, 2021.
Yet another high-quality matchup awaits us in the Second Round of the 2021 Madrid Open as eleventh seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov faces Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan. This is a match between two very talented and enigmatic players on the ATP Tour, and anytime they are involved you can be sure that a lot of flashy and exciting tennis will be on display. Who will win and advance to the Round of 16 here in Madrid?
Denis Shapovalov is currently ranked #14 in the ATP world rankings and is seeded #11 here at the 2021 Madrid Open. Much better known for his hard court success, the young Canadian star is still a very capable player on the clay courts, especially the faster ones in Madrid. He is coming off a Round of 16 showing in Estoril and will be looking to build on that here as he prepares for the French Open. In the First Round he dismantled Dusan Lajovic who is an accomplished clay court player 6-1, 6-3, dominating the match with his serve (winning 90% of first serve points) and his heavy groundstrokes. While Shapovalov is not a big fan of this surface neither is his opponent Alexander Bublik, and the Canadian enters this match as the favorite.
Alexander Bublik is unseeded here at the 2021 Madrid Open, and is currently ranked #44 in the world. Well known for his flair and unpredictability, the Kazakh has matured greatly as a player over the past few years and is having a solid 2021 season so far. While he has been impressive this year, he has struggled during the clay season, owning a 2-3 record. Despite this, he has a very impressive First Round win over Marton Fucsovics and will be confident of winning here. Bublik has a huge game, and is certainly capable of beating anyone on a good day. He enters this match against Denis Shapovalov as the underdog, and on this surface it would be considered a surprising result for him to get the win here.
The two players have faced each other once before, with Alexander Bublik leading the head to head record 1-0. However, we cannot read too much into that result, as it was on an indoor hard court and holds little bearing on this match. It is always difficult to predict the Kazakh’s matches as he is extremely volatile and unpredictable, but has the game to win here. With all things considered I am backing Denis Shapovalov to get the win here. While he isn’t a big fan of this surface, he is the steadier of the two players and was outstanding in his opening round win. It won’t be easy and depending on Bublik has the potential to go the distance but count of the Canadian getting the win and advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
