TennisSection previews the 2021 WTA Madrid Open as Naomi Osaka (2) meets Misaki Doi in the First Round on Friday April 30th, 2021.
An “all-Japanese” matchup is upon us at the 2021 WTA Madrid Open. Second seeded Naomi Osaka will face compatriot Misaki Doi in the First Round. Can the global superstar Osaka get the win as expected, or will Doi be able to cause the massive upset? Osaka is heavily favored to win this match and is one of the top contenders to win the title here in Madrid. Can she be stopped?
Naomi Osaka is currently ranked #2 in the WTA world rankings, and is one of the heavy favorites for the title here in Madrid. She has had an inconsistent 2021 season thus far, with some fantastic performances mixed in with some disappointing ones. Osaka has also struggled with injuries in recent times, and this will be her first clay court match since 2019 when she lost in the Third Round of the French Open. Despite her inconsistent start to the season she is still one of the very best players in the world and has a huge game, capable of explosive tennis on any surface. She has never lost to her opponent Misaka Doi before and is the heavy favorite to advance here at the 2021 WTA Madrid Open.
Misaki Doi is currently ranked #79 in the world and has been having a poor year so far. Surprisingly, she has not won successive matches at a tournament since 2019, which is the year she won her third and last WTA title. She is the huge underdog here against Naomi Osaka and not many people will think that she has even a tiny chance here. Two things that she has going for her is her clay court record throughout her career, and also the fact that she has been quite impressive here in Madrid so far. Doi made it through the Qualifying Rounds without losing a set, and her confidence will be as high as it has been recently. However she is coming up against one of the best players in the world and she is certainly up against it here at the 2021 WTA Madrid Open.
This will be the third time that the two players have faced each other on the WTA Tour, with Naomi Osaka leading the head to head series 2-0. I see this result being no different to the previous two encounters. Simply put, Osaka is a much better player than her fellow Japanese, and I expect her to control this match with ease. She has too much firepower for Misaki Doi to handle and while some rust is to be expected, she has way too much quality for an upset to be an option. Naomi Osaka will win this match in straight sets and advance here at the 2021 WTA Madrid Open.
